Karel Zijlstra, Leewarden 1958, studied at the Academie voor Industriële Vormgeving in Eindhoven. After a few years of painting he started sculpture in 1989. He is fascinated by mythology and relics of ancient cultures. Topics come from Celtic and medieval literature. The cultures of Egypt and Africa are also a source of inspiration.
His images are quite long in terms of shape and the figures often have a subdued attitude. The images are sculpted in wax and according to the "lost-wax method" (cire-perdue)
