Paul ABRAM (1854-1924) exhibited at the Salon des Artists Français as early as 1882. In this painting, he highlights the vanity of earthly goods, symbolized by books (vanity of knowledge) including one of them in the middle, open on the chapter “Idée du Paraître”(?) and scientific instruments (magnifying glass and glasses). Through money, coins, precious fabric, the bag (vanity of wealth and power, vanity of goods). Finally, the transient nature of human life is symbolized by the skull and by the partially consumed candle. The objects are represented to illustrate the emptiness of the life on earth.
Original canvas with a few light dents: heaving in places (see top left) and irregularities.
