Born in 1925 in NYC (in the Bronx), Yitzroch Loiza Grossberg lives and works in NYC. He first studied music at the Juilliard school in New York city (1944-1945), where he befriended Miles Davis and became a jazz saxophonist under the pseudonym Larry Rivers. From 1947 to 1951, he got an artistic education with Hans Hofmann and followed art history classes at the University of New York city.
His first personal exhibition was held in 1949 in Paris. In the early 50s, he reintroduced figuration in American painting and then gave a very personal version of Pop Art, twisting the codes of famous paintings that marked art history like l’Enterrement à Ornans by Courbet or Olympia by Manet.
Larry Rivers died in August 2002 in Southampton, United States.
