The Mercedes-Benz SSK was introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in 1929. The car is based on the Mercedes-Benz S. This car was the last one designed by Ferdinand Porsche for Mercedes-Benz, he left Mercedes-Benz to set up his own company. Out of the 33 SSK cars built, about half were intended for racing. The SSK has won many races such as the 500 miles of Argentina, the British Tourist Trophy and the Grand Prix of Ireland in 1929. Additionally the Grand Prix of Córdoba in 1929 and 1930, the Grand Prix of Argentina, the Grand Prix of Germany and the Mille Miglia in 1931. Many cars crashed or were dismantled for parts over the years, which is why there are now only four or five completely original SSK cars left. One of the cars is in the Louwman Museum. Another one, originally built for count Trossi in Italy, is owned by Ralph Lauren. Because obtaining an original Mercedes SSK is virtually impossible, several Mercedes SSK tribute cars were built such as this one (on a Volkswagen basis). This is the alternative to the many millions a 'real' SSK would cost.
