Joris-Karl Huysmans/Henry Chapront - Là-Bas - 1924
Là-Bas, translated as Down There or The Damned, is a novel by the French writer Joris-Karl Huysmans, first published in 1891. It is Huysmans' most famous work after À rebours. Là-Bas deals with the subject of Satanism in contemporary France. The novel even culminates with a description of a black mass.
The copy here for sale is quite exceptional.
Is one of the only 10 copies out of trade/hors commerce, on Japon imperial.
Also, compared to the 18 detached engravings of the ordinary / common copies, this one contains no less than 29 engravings - wonderful and disturbing alike
Henry Chapront, (1876 -1965) was a French painter and illustrator. Illustrations made for this edition of Là-Bas, along with those made for Oraisons mauvaises by Remy de Gourmont, are by far the masterpieces of the artist, the works that brought him immortality.
A very rare opportunity to purchase one of the 10 copies that exist all over the world, of a literary and artistic masterpiece.
