Beautiful antique statue of Saint Anthony of Padua.
He is depicted here with a book with the child Jesus on top and in his left hand a lily as a symbol of virginity.
Anthony was a contemporary of Francis of Assisi, and is considered an important saint. He was canonised less than a year after his death in 1231.
He is the patron saint of Franciscans, lost objects, women and children, the poor, bakers, miners, marriage, travellers and lovers, and patron against shipwreck, plague and fever.
The evening primrose is named after him because it flowers around his feast on 13 June.
