Contemporary imagination of a moment in history.
Het Princessehof, Leeuwarden
13th December, 1742.
Marijke and her son, Stadholder William IV, get the first boiled potato presented during the lunch by the court gardener Johan Hermann Knoop.
The story goes that on 13th December 1742, Maria Louise van Hessen-Kassel (Marijke Meu), the founding mother of our current royal family, ate boiled potatoes for the first time. "If someone of royal blood ate this weird potato, it had to be safe!" An example for ordinary citizens. A cheap alternative to the bread that was becoming more expensive.
I chose this story to show who Maria Louise was and how she lived. But also to recite the story of our, now ordinary potato. By way of exception, I was allowed to photograph for this occasion in the Nassaukamer in the current Keramiek Museum Princessehof.
