Fine face mask from the BEMBE tribe, former Belgian Congo. This type of mask were worn during the initiation proces.
In Bwami society during circumcision ceremonies, flat face masks are worn, showing typically enlarged concave orbits and bulging coffee-bean eyes. Made out of wood and beautifully covered with phembe (white kaoliën). Overall good condition with a nice aged patina. Contains traces of tribal use.
Provenance: Ex private collection from Belgium. Collected in the period 1953 - 1959 (More details provided to buyer).
