Riebicke was a significant German photographer in the first half of the 20th specialising in sports, dance, and nude photography. Until 1933, Gerhard Riebicke’s photos were published in countless books and magazines.
Gerhard Riebicke was with Helmy Hurt still photographer for the UFA film “Wege zu Kraft und Schönheit” by Wilhelm Prager.
The film - designed by UFA - shows sports, gymnastics and dance performances. Physical exercise in the wild was to serve against the postural defects of adults and children, but was also a life-reforming alternative to city life. The film applies specifically to women.
Aesthetically, the film stages the human body in the style of antiquity by recreating scenarios. It is extremely liberal for the time: "The naked man is at the heart of this film. The naked, not the undressed. For the unforced and rhythmically moving, relaxation of the limbs is a matter of course."
