Textured screen printing made by Mark Kostabi in 2000.
Frame in good condition but not perfect.
Mark Kostabi was born into an Estonian immigrant family in California, where he spent the early years of his life, in Whittier. He studied drawing and painting at the California State University. In 1982 he moved to New York. Since 1984 he has become an important reference figure within the East Village art movement. During those years he enjoyed the provocative use of the mass media, with self-interviews on the theme of contemporary art.
Since 1987 he obtained international recognition and his works were requested by galleries in Japan, the United States, Australia and Germany. In 1988, he founded ‘Kostabi World’: his studio, gallery, office in New York. This structure, thanks to the many assistants, produces about 1000 paintings per year, of which only a small number bears the master’s signature. Since 1996 he’s been splitting his life between New York and Rome, where he becomes a model for many Italian artists. In his paintings there are constant elements, such as the citation of other works or the depiction of faceless subjects, which recall the figures of De Chirico's mannequins.
In recent years [unclear] he has dedicated himself to the design of advertising brands including Swatch watches, espresso cups, computer accessories and recently [unclear] he has recreated the pink jersey of the Giro d'Italia. He has collaborated pictorially with Enzo Cucchi, Arman, Howard Finster (in 1992), Tadanori Yokoo (in 1993) and Enrico Baj (in 1992). He has given interviews to CNN and the MTV channel as well as to numerous magazines and weekly magazines, such as New York Times, People, Vogue, Playboy, Forbes, New York Magazine, Domus, Artforum, Art in America, Artnews Arts, Flash Art, Celestial Theme, including an interview with Radio Uno New York with the Italian presenter Tino Maiolo.
