Very Beautiful Senufo Sculpture from Ivory Coast, early 20th century, magnificent patina of wear and age.
Ornamented with thin scarifications on the face and body.
Grabbed at the level of the bust and hairdo during ritual uses, the dark patina is lighter on the surface.
Desiccation cracks, have a look at the pictures.
Initiates of the Poro society - which formed boys starting from the age of 7 - would carry and hit these pieces on the ground with the base, following the rhythm and the sound of the drums, opening and closing the march (which explains the size of the figurine, 71 cm). Living in a special neighbourhood, the Senufo sculptor, whose training took 7 years, would start by creating objects of daily use, and little by little, he would create sculptures of more imposing dimensions. Initiatory rituals would complete his learning.
