A rare carved oak architectural pediment - originally placed above the entrance of a chapel or crypt - depicting a winged hourglass, scythe and flaming torch surrounded by typical Baroque "C" and "S"-shape scrollwork. The winged hourglass symboles "tempus fugit" or "time flies", typically employed as an admonition against sloth and procrastination. One wing is the one of an angel whilst the other is the wing of a bath ! The scythe is the attribute of the Grim Reaper or Death itself. Finally the flaming torch symbolizes life, which can be extinguished rapidly, as life itself.
