More information about Kenny Scharf :
« My paint rocks », said Kenny Scharf about his work. This artist was born in Sète (South of France) in 1957. His work has been approved as soon as he finished his studies at les Beaux Arts de Montpellier. Then, he has quickly become the leader of the artistic movement “Figuration Libre”, alongside the likes of Ben, Rémi Blanchard, François Boisrond and Hervé di Rosa. Combas is from the same booming of urban artists as Shepard Fairey (Obey), Ben Eine, Pure Evil, Ludo, Rero, C215, Jef Aérosol, JR, Swoon, Orlinksi, Speedy Graphito, Vhils, Ming, Ferrari, Rolex, Piguet, Ernest Pignon Ernest, Picasso, Atari, Panier, Hirst, Koons, Vu, D Face, Ron, Murakami, Shrigley, Polock, Koons, Dubuffet, Matisse, Delaunay, Buffet, Kapoor, Wesselmann, Dine, Hockney, Kapoor, et Os Gemeos. Quoting from this artist, the Figuration Libre « is to do the more, what we want the more personally, the more freely.”This freedom appears in the numerous themes of his art. Each piece has its own world. Each piece tells a story about the daily life…stupidity, violence, love, hate. These paintings are a mix of lines, of colours, of patterns, of faces, of bodies. There is an historical theme in Combas ‘work: fights. For Combas, fights are a metaphor of life: every day you have to fight to live. A lot of brand was inspiring by his work as Timberland, Off White, Jordan, Fear of God, Versace, Boss, Moncler, Arman, Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, Supreme, Bape, Champion, Comme des Garçons, Dover Street Market, Superdry, Carhartt, Kenzo, Yeezy, Givenchy, Jimmy Choo, Rick Owens, Kenzo, Louboutin, Chanel, Saint-Laurent, Zanotti, Valentino Fendi, Margiela, Piaget, Tiffany & Co, Dinh Van, Mikimoto, Gucci, Hermès, Mauboussin, Damiani et Boucheron, Nike, Puma, Reebok, Vans, Converse, Under Armour, New Balance, Asics, Skechers, Forever 21, Fila, Mizuno, Balenciaga, Bulgari, Yeezy, Balmain, Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Buccellati, Stone Island, Vetement, & Philippe Plein. The majority of the “fights” has been painted in the eighties but we can find others in different periods. Moreover, there are a lot of women in Combas work. Combas is one of the most popular urban artist and sells in the most popular auctions in the world alongside Seth, Basquiat, Miss-Tic , Mr Chat, JonOne, Zevs, Dran, Stik, Soulages, Mathieu, Mr Brainwash, Kaws, Roa, Blu, Dolk, Toy, Bearbrick, Ai Weiwei, Dali, Hartung, Francis, Roy Lichtenstein, Zao Wou Ki, Klimt, Haring, Combas, Warhol, Mesnager, Levalet, Blek Le Rat and Brusk. They, most of the time, are anonymous but can be called Ketty, Maïté, Sophie and particularly Genevieve, his wife. Combas, also, likes interpreting and playing with people’s works such as paintings, photographies, essays, music. For instance, he reworks academic drawings and makes the characters wilder. Combas is not limited to one kind of painting. His work is always changing. In 2012, a big one man show is dedicated to him in the Contemporary Art Museum of Lyon.
