Andy Warhol is probably the most famous portraitist of the 20th century: about a thousand portraits of celebrities, made from photography using a process inspired by screen printing (mechanical reproduction)
Among all the famous subjects of Andy Warhol, the one of Marilyn Monroe is definitively the most perfectly emblematic of the way the artist perceived and synthesized America.
Warhol saw in Monroe all the promises, the beauty, the pleasure, the glory and the tragedy that America of the 1960s was able to achieve.
Andy Warhol, both in love with Marilyn Monroe and fascinated by death, started this series shortly after the death of the actress.
For Orange Marylin, Warhol used the image of a woman who had already been mythologized after her death. Here, he highlights the pin-up side Marylin: the lips, the quite vulgar eye make-up, the blond hair. The pin up, originally, were erotic images distributed to the soldiers to boost the troops morale. The woman is an object of desire and an icon.
It's just one of the artist's most sought after series.
