Iconographically, the Kazan icon is usually attributed to an abridged version of the Hodegetria. Such icons go back to the prototype, stored in the Blachernae church in Constantinople.
The Mother of God is portrayed frontally, shouldered, in characteristic robes, with a slight tilt of the head to the Baby. On one hand of the Virgin Mary the Baby Jesus Christ sits.
The infant Christ is represented in full face, the figure is limited to the waist, only the right hand is visible with a blessing (usually two-faced) gesture. The second hand of the Divine Infant is hidden by clothing.
The views of the Mother of God and the Infant are directly addressed to the worshiper.
In the icons of the Hodegetria type, the Mother of God points her hand at Christ. The Kazan image is a mantle, therefore, we don’t see directions with a hand.
The Kazan icon of the Virgin is one of the most revered and reproduced icons, now it is in fact one of the independent iconographic types of the Virgin icons in Russia.
