CONSTANTIN MEUNIER (1831-1905) was a Belgian artist with worldwide fame, mainly because he was an innovator and also founder of the social realism in art.
The Musée d'Orsay in Paris has dedicated a whole room to him (and this for a non-French artist!).
He was a painter and sculptor, which is well visible in this study for his image of the 'Man met de voorhamer', who is in exactly the same position.
The painting has been slightly damaged (fine tear to the left eye - see the photos), but has been closed. A fine dash of grey oil paint splashed on the canvas in the workshop (see photos).
Very powerful and magnificently painted direct spontaneous study for a world renowned image.
