Marinus Drulman often worked under the pseudonym Marinus de Jongere. He made study travels to Belgium, France, Switzerland and Germany. He was a student at the Academie voor Beeldende Kunst in Rotterdam. He drew and painted in the naturalistic-impressionist way, landscapes and harbours. He rose to fame with his harbour scenes. His works are exhibited in the Kamper Museum among other places.
Marinus de Jongere experienced its artistic heyday in the 1950s and 1960s, exactly the time that Rotterdam was working to develop into the first world-class harbour. The ocean giants of the Holland America line were a familiar sight on the Wilhelmina dock and the images of those ships, the pride of seafaring Holland, was in great demand. De Jongere delivered in that time several paintings per day. He had a whole series of canvasses lined up in his studio. While painting, he walked by all of these canvasses.
The fame of the painter was not limited to the Netherlands. The Greek shipping magnate Onassis once ordered 28 works, on which all ships of his fleet were depicted separately. The U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson visited the painter in his studio in Hillegersberg in the 1960s and bought five Dutch landscapes. Because apart from ports, de Jongere also painted mills and fleets. From his home he would walk into the polder. He was very fond of hollow post windmills. De Jongere also has a house in Switzerland, which in turn led to a number of paintings with mountain landscapes with snow-covered peaks. Whilst he was in the mountains he would work on his harbour views.
Although he appeared to be a Rotterdam painter, he was from Amsterdam. His real name was M.J. Drulman, after his mother, though he preferred to use the name of his stepfather, the painter and etcher Marius Janssen. That is how the alias Marinus de Jongere came to be. Only during the occupation, when artists were not allowed to use an alias, he used his own name: Drulman. A work with this signature is therefore traceable to that period.
There are many well known and esteemed painters of the port of Rotterdam. De Jongere occupies a special place among them. He painted the things you would see as a young boy walking along the port side and stealing bananas from the banana boats in the Maas port. As a result of the social, cultural and economic changes in post-modern Rotterdam, there is now a longing for that proud port city. Along the lines of: this is our city, this is what Rotterdam looks like. The paintings of de Jongere help you relive the heyday of the port. The years that cargo ships would be on the Maas River down steam and tug boats would come on and off. Feverish activity is what dominates his canvases.
