A rare piece of very good quality.
Like his brother Jan-Frans, Jozef Cantré wa part of the 'Vijf' (with Frans Masereel, Henri Van Straten and Joris Minne) who, after the First World War, renewed the Flemish art of wood engraving.
He became friends with the Belgian artists Frits Van Den Berghe and Gust De Smet, which meant he belonged to the Flemish expressionism movement.
He was one of the main Flemish sculptors. This explains his monumental world of shapes forms world of his woodcarvings.
